New Trailer: ‘Black Panther’
The trailer for Marvel’s “Black Panther” features sound bites from Gil Scott-Heron’s anthem “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” which seems ironic since the movie itself seems downright revolutionary. Black superheroes have been seen before (most notably in Wesley Snipes’s “Blade” trilogy), but this could be the most Afrocentric blockbuster in Hollywood history.
Chadwick Boseman follows up his role as a future Supreme Court justice in “Marshall” by starring as T’Challa, ruler of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. He transforms into the title character to battle an uprising led by the aptly named expatriate Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). The film reunites Mr. Jordan with his “Creed” and “Fruitvale Station” director, Ryan Coogler.
The teaser includes footage of two “Lord of the Rings” alumni, Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis, as well as Angela Bassett as T’Challa’s mother, Lupita Nyong’o as his onetime love interest and Danai Gurira (“The Walking Dead”) as the head of his all-female squad of bodyguards.
Just as Patty Jenkins’s “Wonder Woman” kicked down the door for female superheroes, “Black Panther” could do the same for black comic-book crime fighters. As Ms. Bassett’s character puts it, “My son, it is your time.” The film hits theaters Feb. 16.
