Rockies wild-card postseason roster and lineup is heavy on possibilities: The who and why
Colorado’s 25-man roster features 10 pitchers
PHOENIX — Rockies manager Bud Black on Wednesday morning turned in his finalized roster for a one-game wild-card playoff against the Diamondbacks, with a nod to pitching possibilities.
Colorado’s 25-man roster features 10 pitchers, including Wednesday night’s starter, right-hander Jon Gray. It also lists starting left-hander Tyler Anderson as an emergency valve in case Gray falters.
One notable absence from the Rockies bullpen: veteran Adam Ottavino, who finished the season with a 5.06 ERA. Colorado’s split with 10 pitchers and 15 field players matches the Diamondbacks’ roster.
Rookie right-hander Antonio Senzatela is listed in the bullpen, but he would likely be used as a strikeout specialist in relief. So, too, will right-hander Carlos Estevez. Three other Rockies rookie starters did not make the roster: Denver native Kyle Freeland, right-hander Jeff Hoffman and 22-year-old German Marquez.
Freeland admitted to hitting wall of mental tiredness late in his first season. Hoffman, too, petered out down the stretch. Marquez was in Colorado’s rotation to the end and he will be considered for a starting spot if the Rockies win Wednesday to reach the National League division series against the Dodgers.
Colorado’s bench includes pinch-hitter Pat Valaika and utility infielder Alexi Amarista. In the outfield, the bench includes Raimel Tapia and Mike Tauchman. Black can use both of them as pinch runners, taking advantage of their speed in situations that call for a move from first base to third on outfield hits.
