New Photos: The Voice: Five Things to Know About Season 13
When Season 13 of The Voice premieres tonight, the artists who hope to get a chair turn from coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Jennifer Hudson and Miley Cyrus include a cancer survivor, a Southerner who had originally planned to be a dentist, a YouTube singer who performs with his 4-year-old daughter, a football player with an NFC championship ring who came out after his career was over, a seventh grade English teacher and a 100 percent Native American.
It is a disparate group but among them are several four-chair turns, making the new season get off to a great start as the coaches battle for the best.
“To me each season does stand out, and it is usually a combination of the singers we get and the coach dynamic,” executive producer Audrey Morrissey told Parade.com at a Q&A following a screening of the first episode. “It’s always great when we have a new coach and, in this case, we have Jennifer, who is a force to be reckoned with.”
Following are five things you will want to know about Season 13 before tuning in tonight:
No. 1. Jennifer Hudson — Jennifer may be a new coach here in the U.S., but the Oscar winner was a coach on last season of The Voice U.K. and she walked away a winner, so she is not a novice. Plus, she is the first judge to have gone through a similar experience from her time on American Idol, so she brings a hands-on experience that the other coaches don’t have.
Not to mention that Jennifer’s facial expressions when she turns her chair and sees the artists for the first time are purely entertaining. In addition, she is no shrinking violet and goes toe-to-toe with the other three coaches to get the artists she wants.
No. 2. Coaches’ Chemistry — One thing we always count on is the bickering between Adam and Blake to be entertaining. But this season the two original coaches have decided to be nice to each other‚ for however long that lasts. But guess what? Their being nice is just as funny as when they bicker.
No. 3. The Teams — There are a lot of big voices this year and Jennifer’s team gets a lot of them, as you would expect. Adam has a very eclectic team. Miley’s pro-female stance plays out in selecting artists for her team. And Blake definitely gets some great country singers, but some of the other coaches get country artists too this season. Morrissey promises a lot of surprises.
No. 4. Changes to the Format — There will be some subtle tweaks, some tidbits, but nothing major. There are no sweeping game changers that will come from out of the blue. But possibly next season, there could be changes to the Battle Rounds or the Knockout Rounds.
No. 5. Filling the Teams — The Voice makes sure they have 90-100 artists ready to go to fill the 48 spots that are divided between the four teams. How fast the teams fill up depends on whether or not they all get a chance to audition.
The Voice premieres Season 13 tonight at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
